Rosa locked up her bike. On the art college campus opposite, students were walking down the curved ramp. It used to serve as an access road to the dairy, the largest of its kind in all of Europe at the time. After this closed, the striking building housed a legendary techno club for a while, high up on the seventh floor, which presented a different image of Zurich to the world from the idyllic postcard city with its Alpine panorama. Rosa’s younger sister, Alba, had thrown herself wholeheartedly into the nightlife, which often ran on into the next day and sometimes into the following night too. For a long time leading up to this point the sisters had had a difficult relationship, covertly controlled by their mother. Depending on your point of view, Alba was perhaps also fighting for something that Rosa had always taken for granted: her father’s recognition. The fronts within the family had hardened more and more until they could only be broken with a huge rupture. In retrospect, it had probably been a liberation for Alba to dive into a temporary world of sound and dazzling excess, in which she not only learnt to say no but also to love herself (and women). Despite the many worries that Rosa had had at the time, she had to admit that the two of them had been closer since then. Aside from the grey concrete access ramp to the art college, nothing else recalled this epoch of Zurich nightlife. Rosa was amazed at how easy it seemed to be to structurally overwrite places. Since space was scarce in the city centre, the various police crime departments had been centralized a few years ago in a new building here on Mühleweg—in the midst of the party mile in the former industrial quarter.
